Winter Tune-up: Taking Care of Adrenal and Kidney
Health
From Alternatives Newsletter Winter 2007-2008
Winter is an ideal time to focus on the important
roles that your kidneys and adrenal glands play in overall health. “People are often starting the new year after
a lot of stress from the holiday season,” said Dr. Patricia Ryan, Alternatives’
founder. “So taking care of these
important systems can help the body fight off illness and disease.
Adrenal glands produce and release several
different hormones that maintain internal fluid levels, maintain sodium and
potassium levels, and control the body’s response to stress. The body contains two adrenal glands, one on
top of each kidney.
In response to immediate stress, the adrenal glands
produce epinephrine, norepinephrine, and the hormone cortisol, according to Dr.
Ryan. This stress creates a sort of
flight or fight reaction in the body.
“Over time, this constant stress can compromise the body’s immune
system, opening the door to various illnesses and health problems,” Dr. Ryan
said.
The kidneys’ important role in the body is varied
and includes adjusting the water volume, removing wastes, helping maintain
blood pressure, stimulating the production of red blood cells and determining
calcium levels.
