Benifits from a Natural Approach, Winter Eye Protection, Making Tea Work for You

Steve’s Corner
By Steve Evans, M.S., President and Chief Research Scientist

More Benefits from a Natural Approach.  Dr. Ryan has made the case that reversing some conditions naturally can be far wiser than relying on pharmaceutical approaches.  As an example, Canadian researchers published these findings  [in Ophthalmology, 117(6):1251-1255, June, 2010] after studying 19,000 seniors who took anti-depressants compared to 190,000 that didn’t.  The average increase of cataracts by the drug users was 15%.  The anti-depressant Luvox increased risk by 39%, Effexor by 33%, and Paxil by 23%.   Not surprising, as the saying goes, there is no such thing as a free lunch.   For those who switched to natural approaches and ended their dependence on pharmaceuticals, past usage did not increase their current risk once off the drugs.

Winter Eye Protection.  We all have been advised about sunscreens for skin protection, but have you protected your eyes from the sun?  Ultraviolet rays can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration.  Exposure to sunlight has a cumulative effect.  So your sunglasses should have a UV coating that blocks out 99% of the harmful rays.  Tinted glasses without the UV protective coating are more dangerous since the tint causes your pupils to open wider so that the retina receives even more radiation.  Note that there is even more risk in these winter months since the sun is at a lower angle and you get reflection off of snow and concrete.  The next time you replace your glasses, add UV protection.

Making Tea Work for You.  Tea, as we all know now, has enormous benefits.  However tea does contain a great deal of aluminum.  As national expert Dr. Russell Blaylock has pointed out [Blaylock Wellness Report, p. 4, June, 2004], unfortunately when you add lemon to your tea, you increase aluminum absorption from the tea seven-fold.  So your smart move is to omit the lemon with your tea since aluminum has been associated with many detrimental side effects.  Moreover adding milk or for that matter any products with caseins eliminates most or all of the cardiovascular benefits that black tea provides [as reported in the European Heart Journal, 28(2):219-223, 2007]. So simply go for the straight tea – to gain its benefits.

Motivation For Change in the New Year

“Motivation For Change in the New Year”
By Kathi Bratberg, RN, MS Holistic Nutrition

The Mayan calendar is finished, and the slate is clean and ready for us to write something new. How do we do that? What does it look like? WE NEED TO CREATE IT. We need to change the mass consciousness of illness, fear, hate, regret, intolerance and guilt that have plagued us for eons. We need a new world of love, acceptance, tolerance, joy, knowing we are all one spirit.

We cannot wait for some one else to do this for us. WE have the power to create a new world, one inside of us, which is where it all starts. WE are the ones we have been waiting for!

But, to do that we need we need to make some changes in the way we think and the way we talk to ourselves. Do you know that 75 % of our self-talk is negative. How can we learn to be love to the world if we cannot find it in our own hearts to love and support ourselves?

This is always the season of resolutions, most of which we don’t keep. Weight loss being one of the biggest ones. . I have guided many people through the HCG diet; some have kept the weight off. Many have not. Maybe it is about more then food (ooh- did I really say that J).

We are offering a program, called Body Mind Spirit (BMS) Weight Management, consisting of ten -two hour group sessions. We will offer a specific diet and education around food preparation so you can develop a new food IQ. We will look at the underlying causes driving our food choices. Once we understand what is holding us back, we can make permanent life changes in all aspects of our life. Scott Carlson, Licensed Mental Health Practitioner, and myself will run this program. We are hosting a free seminar on January 30 to discuss the BMS program, and all of the weight management options available at Alternatives; and answer any questions you may have. You may sign up for the seminar online here.

SO- Hello, and welcome aboard flight #2013. We are prepared to take off into the New Year.  Please made sure your Attitude and Blessings are secured and locked in an upright position. All self-destructive devices should be turned off at this time.  All negativity, hurt and discouragement should be put away. Should we lose Altitude under pressure during the flight, reach up and pull down a Prayer. Prayers will automatically be activated by Faith. Once your Faith ( in yourself) is activated you can assist other passengers. There will be NO BAGGAGE allowed on this flight. The captain has cleared us for takeoff. Destination GREATNESS. Are you taking this flight with us? WE are bound for an amazing year.

I am here to support you any way I can. My wish for you is good health.

Creating Healthy Change In 2013

“Creating Healthy Change In 2013”
By Patricia Ryan, MD, CCN

Hello All!  The beginning of a new year brings up the possibilities of new beginnings, of change.  Many people want to focus on changing something about themselves that they perceive as negative.  I would like to turn it around a little bit and talk about what it is you want to create.  What does the world need to see you bring forward that only you can do!  It can be on a grand scale; such as making a big change at work, or getting a degree.  It could also be on a very small scale, so small that no one else could see the positive change you just made such as a smile, or letting someone in front of you in a driving lane.  Each of us has a beauty that is needed now in the world.  We each need to bring it forth.  It is no longer ok to stay on the sideline and think that what you do, think, feel, and say doesn’t matter.  It does.

So what does this have to do with health?  Everything and nothing.  My viewpoint of living a healthy life includes taking care of myself on every level so I can contribute to the love unfolding on the planet.  If a father comes home every night and feels worn out, achy, and overwhelmed, he is less likely to be present with his children and listen to his wife about her day.  If a mother doesn’t feel well and has health issues such as PMS or headaches, she cannot be there in the way that she would be if she felt well.  I think we all want to get the most out of our lives and be the best we can be for those around us.  Having a body that functions well allows us to live life gracefully.  One can still live a very loving life without a healthy body, but it is definitely a different experience and usually more difficult.

So what does it look like to take care of yourself on “every level”?  I think it is obvious that on a physical level it means eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep, and minimizing your chemical exposure.  What about your emotional health?  How about mental and spiritual health?  Emotional health is actually linked to your physical and spiritual health more than you may expect.  Have you ever wondered why you cannot stick to your New Year’s resolutions, or even a healthy eating plan?   How about why you flew off the handle about something that seemed so little?  You guessed it.  On a subconscious level you are sabotaging yourself.  Of course since it is subconscious, you are NOT AWARE of it.

All of us run programs in our heads, like computer programs, that we picked up as a child.  These programs, this internal dialogue is constantly monitoring our environment to let us know if we are safe or not, loved or not.  These programs remain silent until someone or something pushes our buttons.  It takes courage and time to look at ourselves.  We are taught to never admit our weaknesses and appear to be in control at all times.  Then we are “powerful” and we can control life.  Wrong!  We all need to work on our emotional health.  There is not one person who is exempt from this category.
So guess what - if you are experiencing fatigue, sadness, anger, lack in any way, or inability to follow through on the positive change you want for your life, you are not alone!  We are all somewhere on that same path.  We have relied culturally on our parents or our churches to teach us how to deal with these issues, these emotions.  Our parents do/did the best they can/could, given that they learned from their parents who did the best they could.  Our world needs all of us to learn to get in touch with our own anger, our own fear.  How to we expect to stop wars if we do not learn how to settle an argument with our husband, brother, or friend that we love?  How can we come together and heal our world, our pollution, our social ills if we do not heal our personal ills?  We can’t.  In order to allow all viewpoints, to really walk in another’s shoes, we must first get to know our own shoe-size.  The pay-off for this work is a beautiful open heart, which is able to love ourselves and each other more fully.  The pay-off is the ability to reach our goals and create the world we want both personally and globally.

So, what do you want to create this year?  Do you know how to make it happen?  Do you have the information you need to make your changes?  How about the structure to establish these new habits?  New habits of thinking, feeling, being.... are you ready?

At Alternatives this year we are creating new programs to help you meet your health goals.  Whether you want to reverse your high blood pressure, get off of your anti-depressants,  feel less fatigue or lose weight, we are here to help you.  Each of you has important things to bring to this world.  You are needed.  You are beautiful.  All you need to do is believe it.
